Meet Michelle!

I accomplished that by going south of the Equator to Australia, New Zealand, South America and Antarctica (where I worked twice). As a result, I now have friends all around this beautiful planet. It is interesting to me now that I have actually been to many of the fascinating places often featured in magazines on all seven continents. It's only taken me half my life to get there!

Now we get to embark on a new adventure together aboard the JOIDES Resolution, a scientific drilling and research ship. As the onboard Outreach Officer for this expedition, my job is to show you the ship and the important science we're doing onboard. How cool is that! Speaking of cool, it's going to be cold, so bundle up. We will be sailing from Reykjavik, Iceland, around the southern tip of Greenland, and then up to locations between 72 and 75 degrees North latitude where we will conduct our science work.

Our expedition will take place between mid-August through mid-October, which in the far north means it will be fall/autumn and going into winter. I don't actually like to be cold, which is weird for someone who has lived in cold places most of their life (Canada, Alaska, Antarctica). I've packed all my good polar gear, and I'm actually pretty excited! It's also going to get dark as the sun dips lower in the sky each day in the far north. That also means the Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights, will come out to light up the darkness with colorful ribbons of dancing light. When the Auroras are out dancing, you'll find me on the back deck of the JOIDES Resolution, admiring one of the most beautiful natural phenomena in this world. I'll be sure to take photos and videos to share with you!
