Have you ever head of 'hairy coo's'? That is the Scottish nickname for Scottland's iconic Highland cows! During my trip to Glasgow, Scotland, my friend Amelia and I stopped by the Pollok Country Park to see the famous Highland cows! I've seen picutres and videos of Highland cows before, but I was very excited to finally see them in person!
Highland cows are known for their long, shaggy and fluffy fur coats, which can come in a variety of colors such as reddish-orange, brown, black or even blonde. Often, adult Highland cows are recognized by having long hair that grows over their eyes, short and stubby legs and curved horns. To adapt to Scotland's cold weather, the cows actually have a distinct double-layered fur coat. The longer, outer layer helps protect them from wind and repel rain, while the undercoat is softer and wooly, trapping heat within to help keep them warm. When I visited the park, it had began to pour rain, so the cows had noticably wet coats.
