Stockholm's public transit has a lot going on!
It's hard to keep track of all the different transit options in Stockholm, but S.L. (Storstockholms Lokaltrafik) manages them all, and it does so very well! Since living here, I haven't driven once, and I've only been in a car a handful of times. In fact, it takes longer to get home from the city by car than by train! Not many places offer boats as a public transit option, but Stockholm does!
My daily commute from my homestay in the suburbs to school involves a 15-minute walk to the train station, a 25-minute train ride into the city and then a subway ride almost to my school's front door!
Here are some of the different methods of transportation in Stockholm:
Pendeltåg- The commuter train, mostly above ground, which travels quite fast and reaches the farthest suburbs around Stockholm. (Average speed: 40 mph; top speed: 100 mph!)
Pendelbåt - Ferries that transport passengers across the water and into the Archipelago, providing a great and inexpensive way to see the city!
Tunnelbana - The subway, which operates mostly underground but crosses over the water on bridges in several locations.
Bussar - Buses, which are found everywhere.
