"Di to Biela" or Goodbye For Now!

I have officially been in Ghana for one year and five months. My experience has been so fun and exciting. Looking back at my first few months here in Ghana I have learned so much and now feel more like a part of my community than a visitor. In the beginning, I had to meet new people and try eating new foods. Now I call these people my friends and these foods have become a part of my daily diet.

It has been so amazing to not only experience a new culture, but become fully immersed and a part of that culture. There are so many things that I wouldn't have ever known existed without coming to Ghana. For example, all of the fun and exciting festivals like Damba and Fire Festival. I have also been introduced to new music, dance moves, and lifestyle practices.

The biggest shift in my life here has been adapting to no running water and limited electricity. In the US I never thought twice about turning on a sink or shower. Now, whenever I need water, I have to walk and fetch it. This has made me deeply appreciate all of the things I took for granted back at home and realize how lucky I am to have these everyday conveniences. This has also made me more connected to the environment and understand the importance of natural resources.

As many differences as there are between my life in Ghana and my life in the US, there are also so many similarities.
