Belize is a small country, but the people here love to play sports. Since moving here, I have learned about some really fun games that Belizeans enjoy, and some of them I had never even heard of before. It has been one of my favorite things to discover while living here.
The most popular sport in Belize is football — but not the kind with helmets and pads. Here, football is what we call soccer back home. Kids play it everywhere, in the streets, in fields and at school. It is a lot of fun to watch, and the players are really, really good. Even the youngest kids seem to know exactly what they are doing out on the field.
In the part of Belize where I live, the sport that everyone loves most is volleyball. I was surprised by that at first, but now it makes total sense. Games are really exciting and lots of people come out to cheer and have a good time. It is one of my favorite things to watch on weekends. Basketball is popular here too, which made me really happy because I love basketball. There are courts in almost every town I have visited, including the town where I live. It is always fun to hear a game being played when I walk around the neighborhood.
Now here is the really cool one — pok -a-tok (Mayan ball game). This is an ancient game that the Maya people played a very, very long time ago.
