Bahraini Fashion

Journal Entry:

As I have mentioned before, there are no requirements about what to wear in Bahrain. However, modesty is an important facet of Islam, so most people dress modestly. This includes people who are not Muslim but want to be respectful. For example, I wore the same clothes that I wear in the U.S., but I tried to avoid wearing anything that was very tight or short. Modesty also extends beyond what a person is wearing. It means that people don't like to be stared at, and they also might not want people to take photos of them. Because of this, in addition to laws in Bahrain that prevent taking photos of people without consent, I am not going to share any photos today. If you want to see examples of what I talk about, you can find lots of photos on the internet, and you can also look at "agueducation" on Instagram to see examples from the university I worked at.
Women in Bahrain typically wear abayas, which are long dresses. They come in many patterns and colors, and they are always very beautiful. I never wore one, but I was always jealous of how pretty they are! Most muslim women also wear a hijab, which is a scarf that usually covers the hair and neck. They are worn by muslim women across the world, and there are regional differences in their styles. Sometimes you can even tell where a woman is from based on how she styles her hijab!
