Hi everyone! My name is Tilly, and I work with a lot of people who explore the ocean for a living. My job is to help tell their stories--what they do, how they do it, and what they learn along the way. Today, I want to talk about something that doesn’t always get shared enough: failures and successes--and why we actually need both.

When people hear about ocean exploration, they often imagine amazing discoveries, perfect missions, and exciting moments where everything works exactly as planned. And sometimes, that does happen. But just as often, things don’t go the way we expect. And that’s okay.

What does success look like? Well, it can mean lots of different things. Sometimes it’s finding something important on the seabed. Sometimes it’s finishing a mission safely. Sometimes it’s solving a tricky problem as a team.

Success gives us confidence. It reminds us that we’re capable, that learning and practice pay off, and that hard work can lead to great results. But success isn’t the whole story. What happens when things fail? Well, failure doesn’t always mean something went wrong. Often, it just means something didn’t work this time.
