Meat, Garlic and Potatoes—Oh My!

Introduction:

Do you ever get nervous trying new food? I know I do. For me, it can be almost dangerous! I have a lot of allergies and intolerances that make it very hard for me to enjoy food without worrying about what is in it. Luckily, though, I have not had anywhere near as much fear as I usually do when trying new foods in the States. Chile has been nothing but both delicious and kind to me!

I have learned that Chileans love three things very, very much: garlic, potatoes and meat. These are all things I love very much as well, and luckily, I am not allergic to them!

What food did I try?:

All together, these ingredients make one of my favorite dishes to eat in Chile, lomo a lo pobre, which could be translated as “meat, poor style”. It is called this because it is prepared with meat, fries, eggs, garlic and onions. These additions were readily available for those who did not have a lot of money, and they were known to be “food for the poor”.

How did I feel when I tried it?:

I absolutely love a lo pobre—it is warm, rich and still has a lot of flavor despite the fact that it has few ingredients. It is best to eat on a cold, wet day when you are really hungry! It usually comes in large portions, and it will be sure to fill you up!
