Welcoming the New Year in Cambodia

Introduction:

One of the most important traditions I have learned about in Cambodia is Khmer New Year, called Chaul Chnam Thmey. This holiday takes place in April and marks the traditional New Year according to the Cambodian calendar. It is a time when families come together, schools close, and daily routines slow down.

In the days leading up to the holiday, I noticed my community preparing. People cleaned their homes, swept their yards, and decorated small spaces with flowers and offerings. Shops played loud Khmer music, and children began practicing traditional games in the evenings. The entire village felt more energetic than usual, as if everyone were preparing for something special.

As a Peace Corps Volunteer living in a rural community, I experienced Khmer New Year from within the village, which helped me understand how important family, tradition, and community are in Khmer culture. It is not just a holiday on the calendar. It is a time when people pause from their routines to celebrate together and welcome a fresh start for the year ahead.

What tradition did I learn about?:

One of the main traditions I experienced during Khmer New Year was visiting the local temple, or wat. Families gather there to make offerings and receive blessings from monks.
