At my best friend Rob’s going-away party in Magdalena, I was reunited with one of the most unique animals I’ve seen in Peru: a Peruvian Hairless Dog. If you’ve never seen one before, they can look surprising at first. As the name suggests, they have almost no fur at all, just smooth, warm skin that can range from dark black to gray or brown. Some of them have a small patch of hair on their head or tail, which makes them look even more distinctive. The Peruvian Hairless Dog is an ancient breed that has been part of Peruvian culture for thousands of years, and today it’s considered a national treasure. Seeing one up close at the party reminded me how special and unusual this dog really is.
A Peruvian Hairless Dog is dark black and has no fur. This one has a cute tuft of white hair on top of his head. He is small and skinny, but he is also friendly and sweet.
I’ve met this dog before, so I was excited to see him again. But it’s always a little strange to see a hairless dog! He is definitely an interesting and unique pet.
