Fanesca, Friends and Family: Semana Santa in Ecuador

Introduction:

Hello, everyone! I hope you all had a wonderful Spring Break! I had such a great time talking to all of you in our last video call! I always love hearing your questions and telling you as much as I can about the beautiful country of Ecuador!

In preparation for next week, I wanted to ask you to send me some questions that you want to know about kids your age! I will ask them to a class of students that are in the same grade as you and tell you the answers during the next time we talk!

This week has been busy, but also full of so many fun things! In Ecuador, April and May are full of many holidays and events, and I am so excited to tell you all about them!

What tradition did I learn about?:

The week leading up to Easter is known as Semana Santa, or "Holy Week." The entire country celebrates it, and there are many different traditions and ways of celebrating surrounding the holiday! People receive days off from school and work so they can travel, celebrate and spend time with their families and friends.

Why does the community have this tradition?:

Ecuador is a very Catholic country, and many of the people here celebrate Holy Week and Easter. The celebrations for the holiday begin on the Friday before Easter, which is known as Viernes Santo, or Holy Friday.
