Dear friends,

Today, we will talk about something academic: language. Moreover, I will explore how and why we should learn a second, or even a third, language.

Many people asked me when I decided to do a study abroad program why I did not choose a country where the people speak English. Wouldn't that be easier for me? Yes, choosing an English speaking country would be much easier. However, I think learning a new language also forces a person to learn about a new culture. For example, a lot of people have this stereotype that Germans do not have good sense of humor. But this is not true: the humor is in their language. But we have to learn the language first in order to understand the humor-- to understand what jokes German people find funny!

I would say that learning German is easier for English speakers because the pronunciation and spelling is similar between these languages. This means it is easier for an English speaker to memorize and guess at the words they encounter in German. However, from my perspective, with some knowledge of English, I do agree that German is harder to learn than English.
