Making Dresden Feel Like Home

Location:
Dresden, Germany
Journal Entry:

I was really nervous to move from my home in California all the way to Germany. Leaving a familiar environment behind and entering a new one is difficult for most people. I have tried to keep reminding myself that it is normal to sometimes feel a bit nervous and uncertain as I'm getting used to my new community here in Germany.

I have tried to feel more integrated in my community in two ways. First, I really enjoy simply exploring my neighborhood because it helps me feel more familiar with my surroundings. Second, I have actively looked for new opportunities to make friends. I was worried that I would have a hard time making new friends, especially since I'm still working on improving my German skills. However, I have been able to make connections with many Germans, and they are even eager to help me practice my German after I tell them that I'm trying to improve.

My community here in Germany is centered around my host family, my students and my fellow teachers at the Schiller Gymnasium. I am fortunate to live with a great host family. The family has three kids, who are very energetic and enthusiastically speak German to me. I have already learned so much from hearing them speak and interacting with them!

My host, and mother of the three kids, is also very kind and a great conversation partner.
