Bon dia! (Good Day or Hello)
My name is Matthew Duggan, but please call me Matt. I'm a beach boy who grew up on the Southern Outer Banks in North Carolina. My hobbies are kayaking, surfing, kiting and fishing. Oftentimes, while at home, I can be found just relaxing on the beach, going island to island looking at all the marine life. During bad weather, you can find me coding a new app., wood working or 3D printing. I'm always doing something!
When I went to college at the University of South Carolina, I studied computer science and biology. I originally thought I'd become a vet. Quickly, life had other ideas, and I discovered that I wanted to explore the ocean and use technology to help sustain marine life! I started by flying drones that could automatically find trash on the beaches. Then, I helped create a super cool drone that could collect water samples to help scientists clean up rivers. Before I knew it, I was using machine learning to spot animals on cameras in places like Chernobyl ( I did not find any radioactive two headed deer unfortunately!) to keep track of wilidlife. After that, I built a tool that helped scientists check if shorebirds were successfully raising their chicks.
