An Interview with French Kids

Eva: “Vegetables!”

Alexis: “Pain au chocolat! And cheese.” (Pain au chocolat is a kind of puff pastry with some dark chocolate in the middle.)

What is your house like?:

Adele: “Well, we have beds …”

Eva: “We have a couch in our room, and shelves in our room.”

Mattias: “OK, but you also live in an apartment, right?”

Eva: “Yes.”

Mattias: “And your house has a kitchen, and what else?”

Eva: “A kitchen, and a living room, and a hallway …”

Mattias: [laughing] “Okay, that’s great! Let’s move on to the next question.”

What chores do you have at home?:

Adele: “We empty the dishwasher, and we have to clean our room.”

Eva: “And sometimes we have to clean the living room. Oh, and we set the table for meals!”

What jobs do your parents have?:

Adele: “Lawyer.”

Eva: “Mom is a lawyer.”

Adele: “And our Dad works in real estate.”

What time does school start, and what time do you go home?:

Eva: “At 8:45 school starts.”
Mattias: “And you guys finish in the early afternoon, right?”
Eva: “Yes, but then we have afterschool activities until late.”

How do you get to school? Are you allowed to go to school by yourself?:

Adele: “No, we are not allowed to go to school by ourselves.”
Eva: “We can’t go alone because we’re not old enough ... And we walk to school because it is very close.”

Where do you eat lunch? What is your favorite food?:

Adele: “At the cafeteria.”
Mattias: “And what is your favorite food?”
Alexis: “Fruit!”
Adele: “Yes, fruit.”
Eva: “And doughnuts!”
