As an American studying abroad in a foreign country like Ireland, I don't know anyone here. The best way for me to get to know people is to get involved. The city of Galway has a number of events taking place throughout the year. Some of these events are facilitated or assisted by volunteers. I have signed on to volunteer with them. By volunteering, I'm looking to learn as much as possible about the different cultural events taking place. I'm also hoping to meet people here as I volunteer with them.

Another great option that I plan to take full advantage of includes the many clubs and societies on my university campus. My university, NUI Galway, has more than 122 different clubs and organizations to choose from. Many of these options include different types of sports, academic interests, external/outside interests such as video games and many other options. There is something for everyone. I'm looking forward to their club fair where you can meet and talk with different club members and learn about what they do and if it's a good match.

Getting involved in school is a great way to make friends and you often learn in the process. In my previous school, I was involved in an honor society. It was three years ago, but I'm still very close friends with the people that I met there.
