Bio does not mean biology to Germans. Americans use the word bio as an abbreviation for biology, as in the branch of science involving the study of life and living organisms. To Germans, however, it means organic food.
Beyond their love for organic food, Germans generally support locally grown food items and locally made objects. The “buy local” movement has reached the U.S. as well, but it is more widely spread in Germany. There is even a store in Saarbrücken that sells “unpackaged” products (in other words, no plastic wrapped or boxed items are sold here).
Food and flea markets are quite popular as well. Since the weather is mild here, events can be held outside for most of the year except in the dead of winter. Even the annual Christmas markets are held outdoors!
It does not get very hot in Germany, so many crops must be imported. Avocados are rather expensive as are certain types of tree nuts (ex. cashews and pistachios).
