Coral Reefs: Fragile Ecosystems

Toxic, poisonous chemicals from pollution hurt the coral. Even the sunscreen we wear is dangerous for coral! Also, climate change is causing ocean waters to warm up. When the water gets too warm, the algae leave the coral. Without the food made by the algae, the coral often dies.

You can do your part to help coral reefs by recycling, using less energy and water and stopping people from littering. When you swim in the ocean, you can also use reef-friendly sunscreen to keep the coral safe.
