Exploring Food in Australia

Introduction:

Trying new foods is a great way to immerse yourself into different cultures. During my time so far in Australia, I have had the opportunity to try different types of food which are unique to the country and its culture such as Vegemite, chicken schnitzel and Tim Tams. The vibrant morning culture in Australia also creates an emphasis on coffee shops, breakfast and brunch spots and convenience foods like toasties (toasted sandwiches).

Australia is similar to the United States in how the numerous immigrants coming into the country have added more variety to the types of food that are commonly found in large cities like Sydney. The largest of these groups that have brought their culture and food into the country come from China, India, the Philippines and Nepal.

What food did I try?:

Throughout my time thus far in Sydney, I have tried numerous types of food. As I have attempted to adapt to Aussie’s morning culture, I was given the opportunity to try two of the most popular convenience breakfast items and indulge in its large cafe culture. The first food I tried is also commonly found in the United States: avocado toast, which many locals have shortened to ‘Avo Toast’. This food was mainly served as an easy start before I tried the infamous (to outsiders) Vegemite on toast.
