The Land of the Inca

It's an amazing glimpse into Peru's past, which makes Cuzco such a popular attraction for tourists from around the world. Cuzco also attracts diverse cultures from South America.

What community need did I learn about?:

I have learned how the indigenous communities of Peru have survived for centuries in these mountain communities. I became very curious about how people have survived for generations in the mountains because it can be a challenging place to live. I've also learned that indigenous peoples in this region have valuable knowledge that is becoming more and more endangered when it comes to sustaining natural resources, such as freshwater, from the mountains.

I learned that there are over one hundred spoken languages that derive from ancient civilizations. The Quechua community, for instance, makes up several different types of indigenous populations within the Andean mountainous range. There are concerns that interactions with international cultures are diminishing the influence of Peru’s ancient history. The indigenous communities of the Andes are not as isolated as they used to be. As populations increase, different needs are needed to be met and the Peruvian government is doing their best to handle their countries' regional problems.

Why does the community have this need?:

Indigenous can mean “traditional,” so when we consider indigenous knowledge of a specific culture, this includes values/ideas that relate to freedom, faith, integrity, education, personal responsibility, worth ethic, and selflessness. Smaller communities have historically relied on each other through difficult times.
