Sometimes at markets and shops, merchants will try to charge the "muzungu price." Since prices are not fixed (like when you go into the grocery store and there is a label with a price), prices in Rwanda are negotiable. Some times people think that if you aren't from Africa, you have a lot of money. So I have also learned how to bargain in Kinyarwanda in order to avoid paying expensive prices. I can say "nzi ibiciro" ("I know prices") or "birahenze" ("that is expensive").
Overall, it's really enjoyable to be part of a new community. It is refreshing to see new perspectives and a new way of thinking. It is making me more open-minded and accepting of differences even in my own community.
