Hello! Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Katherine, but I go by Katie for short. I was born in the capital of Kentucky, Frankfort, about two hours away from your town of Ashland. I have lived in KY my entire life and I go to school at Berea College in Berea, KY. I am a senior studying Elementary Education in hopes of one day become a teacher much like your own. I never expected to be living in a foreign country for any amount of time, so this is a very exciting time for me.
I chose to come to Africa because I was really interested in figuring out for myself what this continent is like. American media (news, TV shows and social media) paints a picture of Africa that is not necessarily 100% accurate. What do you think about when you hear of Africa? I would love to talk with you all and find your perceptions of this place. You may think of people being in poverty or not having clean drinking water; which, in some cases, is true. It is quite different than the United States, but there are also pockets of developed metropolitan cities much like Kigali, the capital of Rwanda. I hope that my pictures and our experience together will help to give you another view of Africa, one that is not portrayed as much throughout our country.
