Mountains of Waste

While the landfill grows, the government’s Environment Division is pushing to implement, or put into effect, cleanup projects, including installing recycling bins throughout the city, like the ones I sometimes see on campus. It also provides classes that aim to educate the public about things like the benefits of the three R’s: “reduce, reuse, recycle.”

Instead of sending both trash and recyclable goods to a single landfill, the city is starting to encourage citizens to sort their own trash. Unfortunately, there is only one type of garbage truck that drives up and down my street every day collecting every type of waste, so even if I did sort my recycle from my trash, it would all be taken to the same landfill. So, until a recycling truck appears here, I will do all that I can to reduce the amount of waste that I produce. I will ask for my meals - my noodles, apples and snacks - without plastic bags, and I will ask all my friends to do the same.
