I have officially surpassed my halfway point here in Spain.
Although it feels like I have been here for an eternity, it's also as if I have just arrived. Let me tell you my experience about being a teacher so far. It is definitely an experience to say the least. I work with students ranging from the age of 5 all the way to 16 years old. I have been asked how this is, and I would not have wanted it any other way. Each age has its pros and cons, but the students are great.
There are challenges, though. Being able to control a group of 5 and 6 years old is a lot harder than it seems. After a Thanksgiving lesson where I taught the students that turkeys make the sound 'gobble gobble', one of my students randomly started acting like a turkey and making the noise. To this day, this causes a domino effect where all the other students also become turkeys.
As far as my highschool students, it sometimes feels like I am talking to a wall. Now looking back at it, I can see how teachers felt when they would ask questions and no one raised their hand or wanted to volunteer. They are constantly messing around and making jokes, which does make it better, and they are definitely very willing to participate on other days. Being able to get a break from one age group and going to the other, and vice versa, helps a lot.
A big reason I decided to apply for the Fulbright program was to travel, and I have done just that.
