¡Bienvenidos a Barranquilla!

Location:
Barranquilla, Colombia
Journal Entry:

Hello everyone!

My name is Jess and I´m from Minneapolis, Minnesota where it´s cold for a lot of the year. I just moved to Barranquilla, Colombia to teach and sometimes it feels like the opposite of Minnesota! It´s hot here all the time and there are no seasons at all because it´s so close to the equator. It´s 85 degrees almost every day of every month of the year! Barranquilla is located right on the Caribbean Sea. It is a port city, meaning lots of ships are always coming and going. That´s another big difference for me since I´m from a landlocked state in the U.S.! I absolutely love living near the ocean and I´ve been trying to go to the beaches here as much as possible. Are you from a landlocked state?

Before I came to Colombia, I taught elementary school in Minneapolis for five years. My favorite grade to teach was second grade. I have always wanted to live in a country outside of the U.S., so when I got a grant that would allow me to teach in Colombia for a year, I jumped at the chance!  Here in Colombia, I am teaching English to university students. I am enjoying my job, but I miss my students and my school back in the U.S. and I really miss working with kids every day! Getting to know a new classroom of kids is one of the reasons I´m so excited to take part in this program and meet all of you!
