Si Mohamed, Sculptor of Rare Metal in Meknes

You must go! It is the most beautiful city in Morocco! I have also been on Hajj.

Jane's Commentary: "Hajj" is the pilgrimage that all Muslims are required to take. The pilgrimage is in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, the holiest place in the religion of Islam. Si Mohamed has been on this journey and residents of Meknes probably call him "Hajj" because he has completed the Hajj pilgrimage.

What do you do for work?:

I am a sculptor of Damascene metal. This kind of metal is only here in Meknes, so we have many Moroccans and foreigners come to this city to buy it. It is a treasure! Did you buy some? I come to the shop every day, except Friday afternoon when it is closed for prayer. Some days we have many tourists and some days not so many. But I always give a presentation of how we make this metalwork.

Jane's Commentary: I first met Si Mohamed when I came to his shop and he gave a presentation on how he makes the Damascene metalwork.

Is there anything else you would like to say to students in the United States?:

Si Mohamed: Would you like to take a gift back to them? When do you come to Meknes?...(I tell Si Mohamed about advice he would give students in the U.S.)...Come to visit Morocco! It is a special place that everyone loves!
