This weekend, along with some friends visiting from Gran Canaria and other islands, I took my first true majorero (Fuerteventuran) adventure. I have already seen some of the island, and with my running and a few bus trips I’ve managed to get a feel for the landscape. But I don’t think I had realized before just how dry it is across most of the island. My friends, especially the ones from more humid islands, kept saying it felt like being on Mars. I don’t know if that’s entirely true; it’s more like Arizona than another planet. But the redness in the sand and the extremely dry air we had this weekend definitely made the middle of the island feel less-than-friendly.

That is, until we got to the caves. Wow! The first thing we saw when we got to the caves (or at least the parking spaces close to them) was a black sand beach. A truly beautiful black sand beach. On the beach we saw a few boats, which are used by people from the fishing village of Ajuy (alternatively: Ajui or Ajuí). We weren’t there for fishing, though. We wanted to see the caves.

It’s about a 20-minute walk from the ramp off the beach to the entrance to the caves.
