When I first landed in Australia, I wondered, "How different can food be here than in America?" It was not until I ate foods such as chicken schnitzel and meat pie that I realized that even though Australia has some foods that are visually similar to America, these dishes are generally ten times more delicious.
When I tried foods that are not common in America, such as Vegemite, I was a bit nervous. After trying it on toast, I realized it was really good. Similarly, I was a little nervous about trying the squid at first, but I was surprised by how smoky and flavorful it was! It even had a hint of spiciness, which I was shocked to taste but curious to know what they added.
Each dish had its unique flavor, and I loved the experience of trying something new with every meal. Unfortunately, I wouldn't be able to do this every day for financial reasons, but if you want to try diverse foods, Australia is the place to go!
Even though I did not make any of the meals I ate, I was able to see how some were made. Each dish had its unique way of being prepared, as some were baked, some were grilled and others involved mixing different ingredients. This variety of cooking styles shows how multicultural Australia is, with food inspired by flavors and traditions worldwide.
The only dish I “made” myself was the Buldak ramen, which was super simple. I just poured in the spicy sauce and gave it a good mix. Even though I’m not the best cook (yet!), trying all these delicious meals has made me want to learn how to make some of them on my own one day!
