Some negative stereotypes are that Americans tend to talk really loudly and lack cultural awareness. Some positive stereotypes are that we are friendly, optimistic and hardworking.
When confronted with these stereotypes, I try to remember that each individual is different and generalizations really cannot characterize a whole group of people. Being in Switzerland has taught me that people will always have an opinion on what they expect you to be. In reality, we can each be a lot of different things at once. For instance, I can be more reserved but friendly at the same time. I can work hard but also play hard.
People all over the world have different perspectives on life in general. Instead of being intimidated by different perspectives, I decided to embrace them and learn from them.
As I continue my study-abroad experience, I want to search out even more perspectives. I want to meet more people from different cultures who can change how I see other people and change how I see myself. Meeting new people can help you break down the stereotypes you have of them and teach these people about yourself, too. You can do this without even going abroad! By searching out new kinds of people and new experiences, you can expand your perspectives on just about anything.
