Finding New Friends

It's easier to make friends when you have a shared like or interest. My list includes things like soccer, language classes and conversation clubs, reading, going to the gym or running, cooking and hiking.

Once I had this list I began thinking about how I could use some or all of these activties to meet new people. For example, I am going to try to join a soccer team. I did this in Spain and met some great people. I am also planning on taking Portuguese classes to learn a new language! My program is hosting a virtual book club in which I will participate, meaning I'll get to read in my free time and see other people in my program over my screen. I am going to ask about other ways to particpate in the activities I like once I arrive.

There are also ways to integrate into a new community that I can do on my own if I choose to. Trying new resturants and coffee shops will help me learn about the food of Rosario. Going to museums and learning about their events will help me plug in to the history and culture of the city. Rosario is the gelato capitol of Argentina, so I will definitely be eating a lot of gelato. which is like ice cream but creamier and thicker! I am also going to work hard to build relationships with the teachers with whom I will work with at my school to make sure I have a community to help me professionally.

It can be hard to move to new places, or to do new things in general, but it's helpful and important to think about who you are and what you like and then try to find spaces where you feel welcome, comfortable and happy. Getting outside of your comfort zone will always be a part of making new friends and adapting to changes.
