After the block is inked, it’s transferred onto paper by rubbing over it. The process focuses on precision, balance and artistic expression. It also shows how texts and images were reproduced in the past.
Pottery making: I saw a Korean artist creating a vase and also made my own design on a mug. Pottery is an important craft that has been practiced in Korea for centuries and is known for its simple and natural designs. The artist was very fast and precise when making the vase, so it was a very impressive thing to see.
Taekwondo: I also learned a little bit more about taekwondo, a traditional Korean martial art. It focuses on discipline, respect and physical strength. It is practiced all over the world. This martial art puts more emphasis on kicks and using legs more than other martial arts like karate. It has several different levels that go from white belt to black belt, and from there, practitioners can earn dan levels, which represent mastery.
These traditions exist because they help preserve Korean culture and history. They are a way for people to stay connected to their past while still being able to live in a modern society.
For example, traditional music and woodblock printing are forms of artistic expression that reflect Korean values such as harmony, balance and patience. Pottery shows the importance of craftsmanship and efficiency while maintaining attention to detail. Taekwondo teaches discipline, respect and self-control, which are all very important values in Korean society and their everyday life.
