The unfortunate part of this is the environmental impact. When these heavy machines burn oil, they release carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions. Already, burning oil is the leading source of CO₂ emissions causing air, water and thermal pollution. All of these pollutants worsen climate change. There are some energy alternatives to help decarbonize transportation including electric vehicles (EV). Yet, in Nigeria, where there is an unstable electricity supply, adopting these energy alternatives is challenging. In my time being here, I have only seen two electric cars and know of only one charging station! While this is a major problem, Nigeria is working to reduce such pollution through its National Action Plan on Short-lived Climate Pollutants.
