This Journal is about recognizing perspectives. It’s important to recognize that everybody has a different perspective. It’s also important that we all have a perspective that is wise and well-informed. There’s no better way to do this than by studying history. I think that we all need to learn history, so that we don’t make the same mistakes our ancestors made. As I write this, it is the 11th day of the 11th month. It's a holiday called Armistice Day here in France. In the U.S., it's called Veteran's Day. Do you know why this date is important?
November 11, 1918 was the day that the First World War ended. It was one of the most terrible conflicts the world has ever had. It was called the Great War. On one side were the Central Powers, including Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire. On the other were the Allies, including France, the British Empire, Russia and the United States. After four long years of war, the Allies were victorious. However, more than 18 million lives were lost in World War I.
Today is the 100-year anniversary of the end of the war.
