I did not personally play any games or sports this week. However, I spoke with the American Corners, an organization dedicated to teaching locals English and introducing them to American culture, about potentially hosting a day where students could come and play games, such as Scrabble or Apples to Apples, to expand their English vocabulary and strengthen their conversational skills.
I also taught a grammar class on Friday that focused on prefixes and suffixes. I was able to introduce some of my students to Kahoot for the first time, as they practiced identifying the meanings of prefixes and suffixes and deconstructing words to identify their roots. They seemed to really enjoy the activity!
Serbian university classes do not often incorporate games into the learning process, and many are gradually moving toward more active student participation after traditionally relying on more formal, teacher-centered instructional methods. It was exciting to see my students engage with a more interactive approach to learning English.
I had a really lovely time visiting the National Museum of Šumadija in Kragujevac. It featured beautiful Serbian artwork and cultural artifacts from the region. The museum also encompasses buildings that were formerly part of Prince Miloš Obrenović’s court, as well as some of the oldest houses in Kragujevac. I was surprised to discover some contemporary art on display as well!
Outside the museum, I also came across some cute graffiti doodles created by local amateur artists. They inspired me to go home and create some art of my own.
