One of the most memorable parts of my experience in Costa Rica is eating traditional food. Costa Rican cuisine is simple but very flavorful, and an important part of the country's culture. Through local restaurants called Sodas and meals prepared by my host family, I am able to experience some of the country's most popular dishes!
The main foods I tried were gallo pinto and casado. Gallo pinto is a traditional Costa Rican breakfast dish, while casado is a popular lunch meal found throughout the country. These dishes are available at almost every restaurant, especially family-owned restaurants called Sodas.
I really enjoyed trying these traditional foods because they gave me a better understanding of Costa Rican culture. One of my favorite parts of breakfast was the homemade guava jelly that my host mom served with bread. Her friend sells these homemade jellies and will deliver a 16oz container for around 2 US dollars! And, let me tell you, this is some of the best jelly I've ever had. I also enjoyed eating at Sodas because the atmosphere was welcoming and felt like being invited into someone's home.
