Introduction to My Project

Student Program, I am returning to Argentina to study the Mapudungun language and the different strategies that people use to teach and learn the language. I am currently based in the city of Esquel, Chubut, a small city of about 32,000 people in the foothills of the southern Andes mountains. As an anthropologist, I will be conducting ethnography, which means that I will immerse myself in the city’s everyday life to not only observe other people but to be a part of it myself. I will attend language classes, go to concerts, eat at local restaurants, and talk to as many people as possible to learn about their lives and experiences. I will even be running a marathon here at the end of the month!

Through all of these experiences, I will investigate the importance of the Mapuche culture and language in Argentina today. I am excited for you to join me on my journey!
