About two-and-a-half million people live in Taipei. Every day, people go to work, go to school, shop, play and travel all around the city. How do so many people get around? Let’s see if we can figure it out!
First, you can drive a scooter or a car. Scooters are very popular! In fact, Taiwan just set a new record: there are 63 scooters for every 100 people. That is a lot of scooters! There are also many buses that travel all over Taipei and Taiwan. To ride the bus, you need to pay a small fee. You can use coins, or you can use an EasyCard, which is a special card just for traveling in Taipei. I use my EasyCard every day! Another way to travel is by riding the MRT, which is an underground train. Taipei has five MRT lines—brown, orange, green, red and blue—and each line has its own special song that plays when the train is coming! Since the MRT is underground, there is no traffic, so it is fast and easy to use. Every day, students, workers and tourists ride the MRT all over the city. You can pay with your EasyCard, just like on the bus.
