Let's learn some important phrases in Japanese!

When greeting people in Japanese, we say「おはよ」ohayo for "good morning", 「こんばんは」konbanwa for "good evening", and konnichiwa 「こんにちは」for "good afternoon"/"good day". We use ohayo for any time before 10:00 a.m., konnichiwa for most of the day and konbanwa is only used after the sun goes down. Japanese also has a very special way to greet someone you have never meet before、 「はじめまして」Hajimemashite . This means “Please to meet you for the first time,” so it's rude to use it after the first meeting since it means you do not remember the person you're talking to.

As for good-bye, there are a lot of ways to say it, but most friends say「じゃあ、 また」Jaa、 Matta, meaning "see you later" or "bye-bye".

When we say "yes in Japanese we say「はい」hai and "no" is「いいえ」iie. Other useful things to know are 「ありがとうございます」 arigatou gozaimasu  for “Thank you” and 「ごめんなさい」 gomen nasai  for “I’m sorry”.
