Your Ghanaian tour guide will tell you with a straight face about all of the horrors that happened in the same room where your feet are planted, and the gorgeous views are an uncomfortable contrast to the stories that meet your ears. Much like American students learn about the civil war every year, Ghanaian students have been hearing stories of slave deportation since they were small. Some of them, like the tour guides, have grown desensitized to the difficulties of the past; others feel strongly connected to the displaced people that they consider brothers, sisters, or cousins. Ghana’s major role in the slave trade does not mean that its people stand undivided on the subject today!
