Hot Sauna, Cold Plunge: A Swedish Tradition

Some people do it first thing in the morning to wake themselves up, others go after a workout, and some visit after finishing work to relax and unwind. It's also a great way to spend time with friends and meet new people. In my class, we learned about how sauna bathing and cold-water immersion may affect our bodies and our responses to stress. It was exciting to experience a tradition we were studying in class!

Is this tradition connected to its environment? How?:

Yes! Sweden has lots of lakes, coastlines, and other places where people can swim. Many saunas are located near the water, making it easy to go from the hot sauna straight into a cold lake or the sea. Even when the weather is chilly, people still enjoy spending time outdoors and connecting with nature.
