O Magosto: The Chestnut Party

Here's a link to an article in English that explains the importance of the cork oak. http://www.typicallyspanish.com/news-spain/sight/The_Cork_Oak_Forests_of_Spain.shtml

Other Nature News from this week:

Ourense is a city of bridges--I've spotted at least five of them arching over the river. This river, called the River Minho, passes through Lugo, as well.

What main languages are spoken here?:

Galician and Spanish!

What type of money is used here?:

The euro is used here!

How much does a bottle of water cost?:

Bottled water isn't a good idea--too much plastic! Also, it's more common to order una caña (small beer) or a café con leche/leite if you're looking for a drink in Spain. When you order water, you look super American.

What was the best meal this week?:

I ate freshly-roasted chestnuts from a street vendor. Delicious, and served in a newspaper-cone container.

What music did I listen to this week?:

I listened to lots of gaita music.

What activity was the most fun this week?:

I had the most fun trying to learn la jota, a typical dance along to the gaita (bagpipe) music which is a bit complex and reminds me of the American Square Dance.

What did I read this week?:

I read my students' writing: they had a debate about bullfighting in Spain. A lot of them (especially being from Galicia) are completely against the tradition.
