Silk and Sompeas: Inside a Khmer Wedding

The night before, my host dad showed me photos from my host sister’s wedding. I didn’t realize he was preparing me for what was coming. I already knew it would be a long and exhausting day, but seeing the photos made it feel real.

The next morning, I woke up at three a.m. for hair and makeup because the first ceremony started at six. Several people helped me get dressed, adjusting every accessory and adding the final touches. Every outfit was beautiful and unlike anything I had ever worn before. As a bridesmaid, my role was mostly to stand beside the bride, smile for photos and take part in the processions. It was different from Western bridesmaid expectations, but it helped me see how Khmer weddings focus on presence rather than tasks. Simply being there mattered.

By the end of the night, I was exhausted in the best way. Being part of Sreyneath and Samnang’s wedding gave me a deeper appreciation for Khmer traditions and everything that goes into each ceremony. Even though my role was simple, being invited into such an important moment in their lives meant a lot. I felt honored, grateful and lucky to experience a day filled with so much love.
