The Asturian environment is a uniquely distinct part of Spain. While the south of Spain is known for its hot temperatures and dry seasons, Asturias is called “Green Spain” due to the high amount of rainfall it receives each year. It rains most days during the winter. This is because the region is situated between two landscapes: the Cantabrian Mountains and the Bay of Biscay. The bay provides beaches and dramatic cliffs, while the rainfall brings green pastures that allow for cattle grazing, hiking and much more. The sea also supports seafood, tourism and fishing communities.
Since the land here is fertile, farming and agriculture are big industries in northern Spain. The forests and landscapes provide fun for tourists and locals alike. One of the oldest hiking trails is a pilgrimage called the Camino of Santiago.
