Fabada and More Food!

Introduction:

Food is so much more than eating. It fuels our body. It comes from nature. Some foods remind us of home, while others take us out of our comfort zones. Most importantly, it can bring people together.

During my time here in Spain, I have enjoyed several new foods. For me, food can serve as a sense of comfort and community, so I was pretty excited to see what kinds of food Asturias had to offer. On our first night in Asturias, all of the Fulbright teachers and I went to a traditional Asturian restaurant to try some dishes.

What food did I try?:

Asturias has a very rainy climate most days due to its mountainous nature. This night was no different, but I think it created the perfect environment to try some Asturian comforts. My favorites among these were fabada (meat and bean stew) and cachopo (fried meat and cheese dish).

Fabada is a type of bean stew featuring three meats native to the Asturian landscape. It is served very hot in a wide bowl with a large spoon. Cachopo is an equally heavy fried dish with meat and cheese. You usually split this dish with a friend, using a fork and knife to cut through the crunchy fried shell to reveal the gooey goodness inside.
