Traveling in my Head (through science!)

Location:
All over the world!
Journal Entry:

Hey there! I am writing to you from a lovely, cloudy day here in Kiel. Yes, it really is quite cloudy and rainy here, and in a future post, I hope to be able to explain to you why this weather takes place.

Although I am currently in Kiel, that is not the only place that studying earth sciences has taken me.

My journeys with science all started with studying my own backyard in Rockland. Have any of you recently been to Tallman Mountain State Park? And have you taken a moment to look out from one of the viewpoints over the Hudson River? Did you know that the rocks you are standing on are actually 200 million years old? They were formed during a really dramatic period of Earth's history in which the supercontinent of Pangea broke up. That means these rocks were formed at the same time as some of the earliest dinosaurs. That's really, really old!

Learning about these rocks in school inspired me to want to learn more about the Earth, and which in turn led me to apply for a job at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory (in Palisades). This was where I started to take trips around the world and through time...
