This week I took day-trips to Mainz, Darmstadt, Speyer and Heidelberg. Needless to say, I was busy! If I add up the distance from my home city of Germersheim to each of these destinations, it comes to about 145 miles.
I don’t even know where to start with my travels over the course of my journey here in Germany! Within Germany, I have gone to Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne and Frankfurt, as well as countless other small towns. Earlier in the year, I spent a week in Sevilla, Spain to visit my cousin who was studying abroad there. I went to a student exchange event in Anceu, Spain about a month later. I took a day trip to Strasbourg, France around Christmas and a weekend trip to Dublin, Ireland for Halloween. Over New Years, my parents came to visit and we went to London together. Just this month, I went to Austria to see two of their biggest cities: Salzburg and Vienna.
I almost always get around with a combination of walking and taking the train. I take the train every day to get from where I live to the school I teach at in Rülzheim, and I can walk from my apartment to the university where I take classes. I do have a bike, but with the fluctuating temperatures and inconvenient parking spots for my bike, I usually don’t bother taking it. The main exception is when I go grocery shopping.
