Farewell Frontier: Time to say Auf Wiedersehen

The greatest lesson that living abroad and immersing myself in a different language has taught me is to not indulge fear. The best thing you can do for yourself when learning a new skill, interacting with a person who is very different from you or trying to express yourself in a new context is to acknowledge the fear you have, then choose to set it aside. I tend to be a slightly nervous person, but learning to adapt to German culture norms and act as my authentic self within the German language made me gain a great deal of newfound confidence. Although this is an easier journey to make when actually taking a journey to a new place, it is just as possible for all of you to practice in your everyday lives.

I will never forget the extreme kindness shown to me by the teachers I work with, the people I attend university with and the average person I make conversation with at the train station. They are all so forgiving of mistakes. As long as you are actively trying, most people will do their best to meet you where you are. Trust in that kindness from others, and do all you can to embody it for those around you, as well.

For those who go on to attend a college, I encourage you to find your university’s Fulbright contact and have a conversation. Most colleges have one, and they are trained in how the application process works, as well as how to best advise you on how to write a successful application. I could not be more thankful to my own Fulbright advisor from the university I graduated from. She gave me notes on my essays, encouraged my goals and stayed by my side throughout the long application period.
