The ocean is a huge help for people in Koh Samui. It provides fish for food, a way to travel by boat and jobs for people who work in fishing, hotels, restaurants and touring. Beaches and beautiful islands attract visitors from around the world, which helps many local families earn money.
The island’s tropical plants are helpful, too. Coconut trees, fruit trees and forests provide food, shade and homes for animals. The hills and trees can also slow down rainwater, as it moves toward the ocean.
In Bangkok, the Chao Phraya River and canals are very important. People use these waterways to travel, move goods, sell food and manage water. Parks and trees help cool the city, give people places to play and soak up some of the rainwater!
Koh Samui’s beauty brings many visitors, but that can create problems. More tourists can mean more plastic bottles, food containers, traffic and trash. If trash reaches the ocean, it can harm fish, sea turtles, coral reefs and other animals. The island must also find enough clean water and manage waste for everyone who lives there or visits.
Heavy monsoon rain can be another challenge. Rain is important for plants and water supplies, but too much rain at once can flood roads and make travel difficult. Strong winds and waves can also make boat trips unsafe (trust me, I experienced it!)
Bangkok has its own big challenge: flooding. The city is low and flat – much like Houston — so rainwater does not always drain away quickly.
