Haere rā! (Goodbye!)

While studying abroad I learned many things, both about myself and New Zealand. Before going to New Zealand, I knew very little about Māori people, their land, their culture and the injustices they face. My time spent learning about and appreciating their culture has aided my personal growth. Learning about Māori culture has made me realize how little I know about the indigenous people of North America, specifically the Salish and Kalispell people who live alongside me in Montana. It has motivated me to read more about the land we share, to appreciate and learn about their culture and to ask my indigenous friends to share their stories with me. I am also taking the time to read about the places I visit to acknowledge and develop a deeper awareness of their history.

I have also discovered the joy that exploring new places brings me. Of course, I traveled in the past, but I never felt more like myself than I did while traveling in New Zealand. Since learning this, I have decided to devote more of my life and energy to seeing the world and learning about new places. While in New Zealand, I also learned more about sustainability. I picked up better practices like using reusable bags at the grocery store, using reusable food wraps and using personal care items that are eco-friendly. I have brought these lessons back to the U.S. and begun to teach my friends, family and colleagues about these more sustainable and healthy ways to live. Overall, my study abroad experience has made me a better person who is now more globally-minded. I believe it has helped me enormously when applying for career opportunities. During my job interviews since returning home, I always get asked what my experiences were like and what I learned from them.
