Introduction to Bahrain

Advertisements

There are advertisements on the side of the highways here, but they are usually smaller and closer to the road than American billboards. Common billboards I see are for McDonald's, Dunkin' Donuts and telephone companies or banks. Sometimes they are all in English, sometimes in Arabic and sometimes both.

Historical Places

There is a lot of history in Bahrain. You might see forts that are four hundred years old or houses that are two hundred years old. History was not my favorite subject in school, but it's interesting to see these places and imagine what life was like.

Small Shops

There are lots of large supermarkets here, similar to Walmart or Target, but there are also many small shops. They usually sell very specific things. For example, there might be a store that only sells dried fruit, or another store that only sells curtains. My favorites are the ones that sell fresh bread and desserts!

Mosques

Bahrain is a Muslim-majority country, so there are a lot of mosques here. They range from large to tiny, and they usually have very beautiful architecture. Muslims pray five times per day, and you can hear the call to prayer (called the Adhan in Arabic) from almost anywhere in Bahrain during prayer times. Most people also dress very modestly. The majority of women wear a long dress called an abaya, and the majority of men wear a long robe called a thobe. It isn't mandatory to dress like this, though. I usually dress the same way I do at home, but I try to be respectful by dressing a little more modestly (like following a school dress code).
